Break in Presence (VR)

Any moment that shatters the illusion of being in the virtual world, a technical failure, an unresponsive interaction, a UI that floats unnaturally, or a tracking loss.

In games, this means

A flat 2D menu appearing in a VR world, a controller that stops tracking, or a physics object that clips through a surface all cause breaks in presence. Once broken, presence is difficult to re-establish. VR UX design requires treating every interaction as a potential break point, menus should exist in world-space, UI should feel physical, and failure states need their own comfort-first handling.
