Soft Cap vs. Hard Cap

A soft cap is a point where progression slows dramatically but continues. A hard cap is an absolute ceiling beyond which no further progression is possible. How these limits are communicated is a critical UX and motivation design challenge.

In games, this means

In Destiny, players approaching the soft power cap see diminishing returns but are rarely told this explicitly, causing confusion about why progress feels stalled. A well-designed cap is communicated before players hit it, explains the new progression path clearly, and ideally provides a visible goal beyond the cap. Hidden caps that players discover by accident feel like betrayal.
