Variable Reward Schedule
A reinforcement pattern where rewards are delivered unpredictably, sometimes after one action, sometimes after many, producing compulsive engagement.
In games, this means
Loot boxes, random drop rates, and fishing minigames all use variable reward schedules. The unpredictability, not the reward itself, drives compulsive play. This is the same mechanism as slot machines. The UX question is whether it is being used to create genuine excitement or to exploit compulsive behaviour.
