Tutorial Fatigue
The emotional disengagement that occurs when onboarding is so long, slow, or patronising that players check out before reaching real gameplay.
In games, this means
Games that front-load every system with mandatory tutorials before allowing free play consistently lose players who were excited at launch. The threshold is lower than most developers expect, players who have been gaming for years have experienced hundreds of tutorials and their patience is calibrated accordingly. If the player cannot act freely within the first few minutes, tutorial fatigue is already setting in. The fix: contextual teaching, invisible tutorials, and trusting players to explore.
